OFEXPLORE - Exploring the Power of the Myth in Human Life
Course Description
Exploring the Power of the Myth in Human Life
On PBS in 1988, mythologist, teacher, and author Joseph Campbell and journalist Bill Moyers had a series of conversations entitled “The Power of Myth,” which thoughtfully examines the role of the myth in society and carefully notes how myths and epics are linked in the human psyche. Historical examples of this, such as Telemachus in THE ODYSSEY, as well as modern ones, like Luke Skywalker in STAR WARS, are discussed. The importance of the hero is also denoted, revealing how the hero psychologically departs from his/her childhood through various means as he/she enters a transformative journey of self-discovery and growth into adulthood. Think of your own heroes and how they have impacted your life as you enjoy watching the miniseries of the fascinating conversations between these two brilliant men. The class will watch the episodes and discuss their reactions to Campbell’s and Moyers’ dialogues.
