PSMOS - Certified Occupational Safety Specialist
Course Description
LSU Professional Development in partnership with the Alliance Safety Council offers you the opportunity to attend Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) program. This unique 40-hour program is designed to offer a comprehensive initiation into safety requirements and safety implementation. We offer both in-person and virtual course options. Virtual COSS® courses are offered in real-time during live classes with our expert COSS Instructors. The week-long course features the same innovative and rigorous curriculum as our in-person COSS training with digital coursework that includes daily compliance moments and proctored exams.
Course Format Options:- Classroom courses - students will participate in classes held on the LSU campus from 8:00AM- 5:00PM Monday-Friday.
- Live Online courses - students will participate in a live 6-hour online session via Zoom video conferencing Monday – Friday. Live sessions begin at 8:00 a.m. Central Time. After each session Monday - Thursday, students can work on their own time to complete daily exercises and readings. On the final day, students will participate in an additional 2-hour Zoom session to complete final graded activities including the final exam, final compliance moment, and safety presentation.

Safety Specialist Knowledge
The heart of the COSS program is the solid foundation built on learning to read and apply the OSHA safety and training requirements in 29 CFR 1910 and 1926. Other areas of knowledge covered are:
- Occupational Safety and Health Act.
- Amendments to the OSHA Act.
- 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry) and 1926 (Construction) Standards.
- OSHA training requirements.
- Specialized training.
- OSHA inspections.
- How to determine applicability.
- Coordinating multiple worksites.
- Citations and penalties.
- OSHA recordkeeping requirements.
- OSHA 300 requirements.
- Multi-employer rule.

English Proficiency Requirements
Continuing Education Programs
Continuing Education (CE) courses and programs offered online through LSU Online & Continuing Education typically include a combination of lecture and discussion as well as reading and writing assignments. You need an adequate command of English in all skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to participate in classes.
If English is not your native language, you must meet one of the English language proficiency requirements below to be successful in our CE programs. If you intend to register for a CE course or program, you can determine whether you meet English proficiency requirements by self-assessment prior to enrolling. We want to empower you, the learner, to progress successfully. Completing this self-assessment will enable you to make a good decision on whether you can complete one of our programs.
Intermediate English Skills
Most CE professional development courses and programs require at least intermediate English skills, which are equivalent to a B2 level of English language proficiency on the Self-Assessment Form. When assessing yourself, be sure to read through each of the categories under Column B2 to make sure you meet proficiency requirements.
Advanced English Skills
