Course Description

Alma is one of only 11 sugar mills still operating in the state of Louisiana. It produces raw sugar and blackstrap molasses. During the harvesting of sugar cane, known locally as "the grinding season", Alma Plantation becomes one of the area's largest employers. Sugar has been grown and refined at Alma Plantation continuously since 1844. We will tour the operating mill observing the delivery of locally grown sugarcane, grinding of the cane and refining into raw sugar. Following the tour we will go to the Alma Store for lunch. The store offers plate lunches and sells products produced by the mill. Meet at the Alma Sugar Mill at 10:15 am for a guided tour starting at 10:30. Additional details as to meeting location and carpooling from St. Francisville or other locations will be provided prior to the date of the tour. ALL OLLI MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND. Registration is required and the number of participants are limited. There is no fee for the tour.
