Course Description

At the close of the Civil War, union forces captured and imprisoned Confederate president Jefferson Davis. But what to do with him was a vexing problem that occupied the attention of the federal government for nearly four years. The treason prosecution of Davis was seen as a test case on a question central to the Civil War: the constitutionality of secession.

Required Supplies: Secession on Trial: The Treason Prosecution of Jefferson Davis by Cynthia Nicoletti.
