Course Description

The last dynastic government in Chinese history, the Qing Empire, was one of the most powerful empires by the end of the 18Cth century. However, it fell asunder only a century later. Behind its demise was the domestic chaos rampant in the 19th century. In this course, we trace the economic, social, and political causes and impacts of rebellions in the 19th century China. Our goal is to understand how those rebellions challenged and doomed Qing’s Mandate of Heaven and continue to shape China’s national identity and national discourse in the 20th and 21st centuries.
