Course Description

When Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, he referred to often historical precedents for his doing so. He said Ukraine had always been part of Russia and should return to that status, that Ukrainians are really a subset of the great Russian people, and that they have been led astray by Westerners seeking to undermine the Russian people. He also talked about how the West has always tried to subvert Russia’s standing in the world and how the invasion seeks to put an end to that. This course will present a brief history of Ukraine and its role in Russian history and how Russian leaders have come to view Russia’s relationship with the West.
