OLWOMEN - Women in the History of Art and the Marks They Made

Course Description

You may already know some names, such as the Renaissance artist, Artemisia Gentileschi, or Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, or American Impressionist, Mary Cassatt, or American artist, Georgia O’Keefe. But what about Judith Leyster or Käthe Kollwitz, or Hilma of Klint, or Sonia Delaunay, or Louise Bourgeois, or hundreds of others? Why don’t we know about them, or how more famous spouses or partners eclipsed them, or why and how their work got attributed to men, in some cases for over 200 years. The narrative is complicated and goes back at least to pre-classical Greece. We’ll explore the amazing contributions of a selection of unsung women artists and celebrate their work.
