Course Description

This course provides information related to Elder Abuse and awareness of cyber threats. "Elder Abuse – Cyber enabled Financial Fraud: Financial Fraud Schemes targeting elderly and/or vulnerable individuals through Romance Scams, Crypto Currency Scams/ Pig Butchering, Kidnapping Scams, Grandparent help scams, Gift Card Scams, Business Email Compromise (BEC), Account Takeover (ATO), Tech Scams and Government Imposter Scams (Smishing). The crime is often initiated through phishing emails and/or pop ads advising of some imminent hazard to be avoided. Victims are directed to transmit funds via ACH/Wires, Cashier’s Checks, Money orders, Zelle/CashApp, and/or Virtual currency. Fraudsters direct victims to maintain communication via messaging platforms: WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, etc. In many instances, the fraudsters use spoofed/stolen social media accounts to poise as trusted relationships to deceive victims. The National Council of Aging Estimates $3 Billion per year are lost to these types of frauds."
