OLGROW - Growing Up in the South through the Eyes of Major American Authors
Course Description
In 1991, editor Suzanne W. Jones put
together "Growing Up in the South", an
anthology of short stories by authors
who each captures a unique vision of
experiencing life in the South. She notes
in the introduction her desire for more
people “to experience the challenges and
rewards of the full range of Southern
literature.” And by virtue of the authors
represented, Jones does just that.
She includes the best authors of the
twentieth century: William Faulkner,
Ernest Gaines, Eudora Welty, Bobbie Ann
Mason, Alice Walker, Shirley Ann Grau,
Ellen Gilchrist, Flannery O’Connor, Henry
Louis Gates, Jr., among others. Whether
you were born in the South and have
lived there all your life, or you just moved
to the South, you will enjoy reading and
discussing short stories created by the
most talented authors America has
ever produced. Southern authors and
Southern living are truly special.
