OLAMOR - Book Discussion: Amor Towles' Table for Two
Course Description
Amor Towles’ new collection TABLE FOR TWO, which contains six short stories and one novella, will be the subject of reading and discussion for this class. Written in Towles’ sophisticated, smooth prose, the short stories vary intriguingly: a couple living first in Communist Russia and then New York, a forger of famous authors’ signatures, a man trying to help an alcoholic, a couple who break up over a skating passion, a thoughtful husband who illegally records Carnegie Hall performances, and conflict over fragments of a DiDomenico painting. The novella follows Towles’ character Evelyn Ross (who originally appears in his Rules of Civility) as she helps Olivia de Havilland, a victim in a blackmail scheme in Hollywood. The author notes that “lives can often change materially due to a single conversation at a table for two” (www.amortowles.com).
