OLEVOL - The Evolution of the Sonnet
Course Description
The sonnet is one of the oldest poetic forms, created in the thirteenth century as the Italian sonetto. Over centuries, poets have experimented within its strict 13-line form using both the conventions made popular by Francesco Petrarca and later creative liberties by William Shakespeare and John Milton, among others. In this class, we will trace the creative evolution of this short poetic form, moving from its creation as a vehicle for love poetry to its later use for social and political messages. We will look at the format, imagery, and different types of sonnets and discuss the development of the sonnet sequence through writers like Petrarch, Philip Sidney, Mary Wroth, Shakespeare, John Donne, and Milton.Notes
