Course Description

Do you have children or teens in your life? This course explores how books— and conversations about them—can build bonds and support social-emotional
development. You’ll learn which formats, like graphic novels and novels in verse, resonate with young readers and gain insight into the growing diversity in
children’s literature. Even if you don’t have kids, you won’t want to miss out on some of the best books. We’ll discuss what current trends in children’s books
reveal about society, the influence of social media, and how this knowledge can help families guide young readers toward stories they’ll love. Participants
are encouraged to bring a book to class and share why they’d recommend it to a child. Type:

Discussion and Lecture.

Optional supplies: Jim Trelease’s Read- Aloud Handbook: Eighth Edition Paperback – Illustrated, September 3, 2019, by Jim Trelease (Author), Cyndi
Giorgis (Author).
