Course Description

When Kate Chopin published The Awakening in 1899, it was a shocking Louisiana novel about a woman who discovers her independence in art and desire. Readers loved or loathed it, and it went out of print for 60 years. Once rediscovered, it was lauded as expressing women’s independence far ahead of its time. It was praised for its creativity but also banned for its immorality. We will consider what it means to us and why it is considered an American classic now. Type: Mainly discussion.
