Course Description

The Civil War in New Orleans course will cover the story of the city and region during that most turbulent period in our history. The city, and for the most part, its people capitulated after only offering token resistance. So, much of what we were taught were myths rather than delve too deeply into the uncomfortable parts of the history. The real-life stories of courageous Southern women, the black residents, and local Union men were never acknowledged. The course will focus on the real stories of perseverance in the face of unfathomable hardships, the pain of losing loved ones and the turning upside down of the lives of the residents of the region. We will use those stories to paint a more realistic picture of what took place during that period in our history. Type: Discussion and lecture.
