Course Description

The Mississippi River Basin, formed relatively recently in geological history, includes the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, and Arkansas rivers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has straightened parts of the river and added locks and dams for navigation and flood control. The basin shaped commerce, slavery, disease spread, and the rise of Jazz and Blues. It supports diverse fish and serves as a major migratory route for birds. The river system carries water, sediment, nutrients, and pollutants to the northern Gulf of Mexico through Louisiana’s bird’s foot delta, while the Louisiana coastline continues to erode. This overview highlights the basin’s major role in American history and ecology. Type: Discussion and lecture.
