Course Description

Colonialism took two forms: overland, as tsarist Russia and imperial China expanded, and the better-known salt-water colonialism of Europeans sailing out to seize other lands, in the oft-brutal process introducing diseases that killed millions but leaving after 20th-century decolonization the governmental forms and national boundaries that in most cases remain today, thus shaping the world map.
