PODTD - Digital Twin Tools & Interoperability
Course Description
This course advances foundational Digital Twin knowledge by focusing on the software platforms, tools, and real-world challenges involved in building operational Digital Twin systems. Learners will critically evaluate the trade-offs between bespoke, custom-developed solutions and commercial off-the-shelf platforms, considering factors such as flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. The curriculum introduces key industry software platforms, highlighting their core functionalities, typical applications, and interoperability challenges.
Participants will gain a fundamental understanding of 3D theory relevant to spatial data management, geometry handling, and visual representation within Digital Twins. The course further covers methods for acquiring, preparing, and integrating diverse data types—including real-time sensor data and 3D assets—into cohesive Digital Twin environments. Through applied hands-on activities, students will import raw data, configure system behaviors, and assess the constraints of precision, performance, and feasibility within practical deployments.
This course is designed for individuals seeking applied, system-level expertise in the evaluation, integration, and management of Digital Twin platforms and solutions.
Course Outcomes:
- Compare and contrast custom-built and commercial digital twin solutions based on scalability, integration and lifecycle costs.
- Summarize core features, applications and trade-offs of common digital twin platforms.
- Apply foundational 3D spatial concepts to digital twin development using sandbox tools
- Demonstrate data integration workflows between digital twin platform and the real world using a structured pipeline.
This course includes a sandbox enviroment that allows learners to gain hands-on experience using Digital Twin software.
