Course Description

In this class, we will discuss the ancient Mesopotamian poem The Epic of Gilgamesh, studying the origins of the concept of heroism and the genre of epic poetry. Stories about the Mesopotamian king and hero Gilgamesh date back over four thousand years, first carved into clay tablets by inhabitants of the cradle of civilization. Gilgamesh has been identified as the prototype of heroism, inspiring later cultures to develop characters like Heracles, Odysseus, and Aeneas. In our discussion, we will explore Mesopotamian religion and culture, including an in-depth look at life in the ancient Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian empires. We will also talk about how the hero’s journey has evolved over millennia and what this reveals about our culture. Are our heroes like 4000-year-old Gilgamesh? Join us and find out! Type: Discussion and Lecture.
