Course Description

The Civil War was central to the history of the United States--preserving the Union, ending slavery, and some would argue creating a new nation. The period of Reconstruction that followed the war played an important role in consolidating and mitigating those and other results of the war. The class will begin with a description of the two sections, North and South, on the eve of the war then offer an interpretation of why, in Lincoln’s phrase, the war came. It will by no means offer a battle-by-battle account of the war but will discuss the military conflict and why and how it ended as it did. The class will then move on to an analysis of the period of Reconstruction that followed. It will end with a discussion of how Americans have interpreted and felt about both the Civil War and Reconstruction. Type: Discussion and Lecture.
