Course Description

This is for anyone who loves or is curious about European and American classical music. Rather than monotonous facts (dates, periods, composer bios, etc.), round-table discussions will explore what music that we like (or don’t like) and why music stirs up memories and emotions. We will discover how composers use specific musical elements and characteristics to evoke emotional reactions and discuss the interesting stories and backgrounds of individual pieces. Each class following the introductory class will focus on a particular musical genre, from symphonic music (and orchestral instruments) to chamber music to solo and choral vocal music, and finally to keyboard music as a special category. A comprehensive listening list will be provided at the end. Type: Discussion and lecture.
