Course Description

This course examines the hidden dimensions of World War II in New Orleans. This lecture explores how the Crescent City became a site of pre-World War II and wartime intelligence activity, drawing the attention of federal investigators, military officials, and foreign operatives. Attention is given to German espionage and the ways in which German agents and sympathizers sought to gather information, cultivate influence, and exploit New Orleans’s importance as a gateway to the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi River system. Situating local events within the broader history of global conflict, the presentation considers how American authorities used surveillance, counterintelligence, and the law to monitor and disrupt suspected espionage networks in the Crescent City.
