Course Description
This class centers on Terry Tempest Williams’ bestselling book The Glorians: Visitations from the Holy Ordinary, a thoughtful exploration of our shared vulnerability and connection with the natural world. Through discussion, participants will reflect on the “holy ordinaries” that shape their own lives, childhood memories of nature, and humanity’s relationship with Earth. We’ll also read both poetry and prose, which are connected thematically with Williams’ book, by Mary Oliver, Catharine Savage Brosman, Mona Lisa Saloy, David Middleton, Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Wordsworth, etc. Like the writing of the Psalms, Whitman, Emerson, and Thoreau, it transcends the ordinary in life and zeroes into the "holy ordinaries" that contribute so greatly to human wellbeing. According to Williams, who is the Writer-in-Residence at Harvard's Divinity School, the Glorians are "ordinary, often unlooked presences--animal, plant, memory, moment--that reveal our shared vulnerability and interconnectedness with the natural world.
