Course Description

Sickle cell anemia is a deadly disease caused by a gene that makes red blood cells curl into sickle shapes that clog the blood vessels causing excruciating pain and without medical intervention, eventually death. If natural selection eliminates fatal genes shouldn't this disease have disappeared? We will explore evolutionary biology to answer this and other puzzling questions about life on earth. Starting with the ideas of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace and using remarkable videos from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute we will discuss what evolution has to teach us about our own place in the tapestry of life. The class will also be enriched by graduate students from LSU who will talk about their own research and what it teaches us about how life can evolve as the climates on earth are changing.
