Course Description

In this course, we will begin long before Baton Rouge existed, exploring how the Mississippi River slowly built the land we live on over thousands of years. Once a meeting place for the Bayougoula and Houma peoples, this region was later shaped by French, British, and Spanish influence. From a strategic fort to an evolving collection of neighborhoods and land grants, Baton Rouge has experienced a unique and often overlooked history. To bring the city to life, we will meet people from the past and present, explore maps and photographs, and discuss the gathering places that helped shape Baton Rouge. Focus will be given to the kinds of places that bring people together, including spaces that strengthen families, neighborhoods, and cultural communities, as well as places where people from different backgrounds connect with one another. This is an opportunity to see Baton Rouge in a new way and to share memories, observations, and conversations. Whether you are a lifelong resident or new to the area, this course offers a deeper appreciation for the people, places, and stories that define Baton Rouge. Type: Discussion and lecture.
