NC 35 - Preparation for College Mathematics

Course Description

This is a non-credit course. It is designed to provide preparation and review of academic skills necessary for college-level study; however, no university credit is issued, and the course will not appear on an official transcript. Students who complete and pass the course will earn a certificate of completion.

Preparation for College Mathematics is designed to develop basic algebra skills that are required background knowledge for College Algebra and will help you be more successful in that course and other future for-credit math and science courses.   You will gain many skills from taking this course. You will learn how to think and how to reason with mathematical facts. You will learn to organize information according to mathematical structure and to utilize mathematical concepts. You will also learn the manipulation skills that are fundamental to the field of algebra.

Specfic topics include the Beginning and Intermediate Algebra necessary for the study of college mathematics: real numbers, order of operations, integer and rational exponents, radicals, polynomials, factoring polynomials, rational expressions, introductions to solving equations and inequalities in one variable and the rectangular coordinate system, applications.

Format

• Online, self-paced, open-enrollment period
• Six months to complete course
• 7 modules, 2 exams

Special Requirements: a computer with reliable internet access, a webcam, and a headset or speakers, and a microphone.

You are also responsible for purchasing separately the required textbooks and any additional required materials for this course.

Paid access to Pearson’s MyMathLab is required. A recent version of MS Word is required for assignments. Access to a camera or scanner is required for some assignments.
